For anyone who might have missed it, Fatty Patty’s Cakes and Cafe has moved from the west end to Thomas Drive. They re-opened yesterday and I decided to give them a try for lunch.
The menu is simple. They offer a daily special, usually some kind of comfort food, which includes tea and dessert all for just $8.95. Yesterday’s was meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, lima beans and cornbread. Today they offered chicken florentine, salad and garlic bread.
In addition to the specials, you can get a 1/2 lb burger for $8.95 or choose from their selection of salads, soups and sandwiches.
I chose to have a turkey sandwich on toasted wheat bread with pepper jack cheese and tomatoes. It was delicious. I am extremely picky about my tomatoes; they need to be super ripe or not at all. These were romas and they were about as good as you can get without picking them from your own backyard or visiting an organic market.
I guess I am a little picky about turkey, too, because I made sure that this was not the processed stuff. Renee, the owner assured me that it was quality turkey, hand sliced in their kitchen and it was in fact quite delicious.
The sides that come with a $6.95 sandwich are a choice of kettle chips, potato salad, pasta salad, fresh fruit salad, broccoli salad and cole slaw. For an extra $1 you can substitute sweet potato fries, french fries or fried corn on the cob.
I was about to order the fresh fruit as my side when they all convinced me to try the fried corn on the cob. This is a house favorite and according to the staff it can’t be found anywhere else in town. I will say that it was very different and I didn’t dislike it but since they were letting me try a few other sides for future reference I decided that it probably was not my favorite. The broccoli salad with nuts and a sweet mayonnaise-based dressing was super interesting but my favorite of those I sampled was the fries. They were hand-cut, shoestring potatoes and lightly seasoned in house. Delicious! I can’t wait to go back and try the sweet potato fries!
Fatty Patty’s Cake and Cafe is also your source for wedding cakes and special occasion cakes and their work has been featured in such prestigious places as the Southern Wedding blog, Weddingwire, Martha Stewart Weddings, The Knot and Mississippi Magazine. In fact, Weddingwire awarded them the 2009 Bride’s Choice Award!
Fatty Patty’s Cakes and Cafe is located in the Coastal Palms Village center on Thomas Drive, across from the Navy base. They are open for breakfast and lunch, 7am to 2pm every day but Sunday. From now til the end of May, 2011, with the Beach Bux coupon you can get a free serving of dessert with your purchase of a sandwich and a drink!
